What Causes Cracked Heels

What are Cracked Heels?

Cracked heels are caused by cracking and splitting of the skin. It is also a sign of lack of attention to foot care. When the skin around the heels becomes thickened and dry, it loses the suppleness and elasticity. Sometime, it can split under simple pressures like walking. The daily activities such as walking and standing for long hours may lead to unsightly, painful and even bleeding cracked heels.

Causes of Cracked Heels

Naturally dry and thick skin around the heel is highly likely to crack due to excessive feet activity.
Prolonged standing at work or home.
Overweight may increase the pressure on the normal fat pad under the heel.
Back-open shoes affect the fat under the heel to expand sideways and increase the possibility to get cracked heels.
Skin diseases or skin disorder such as Athlete’s foot, Eczema and Diabetes may cause cracked heels.
Excessive exposure to the water can strip the natural oils and leave skin dry and rough.
       Circulation problems.
Deficiency of vitamins, minerals, zinc and malnutrition.
       Unhygienic circumstances or conditions.

Solutions to Cure Cracked Heels

Vegetable Oils

Photo from: (http://namastenutritionist.com/)

A variety of vegetable oils can be used to treat and prevent cracked heels. Vegetable oils such as sesame oil, olive oil and coconut oil will work. Firstly, soak your feet in the soapy water and scrub it with pumice stone. Wash your feet and dry them with clean water. After that, apply any vegetable oil on your feet and put on a pair of clean socks and leave them overnight while you sleep. Repeat the steps for few days until the cracks on your heels gone completely.

Lemons
Photo from: (http://food.ndtv.com/)

Method 1:

Soak the feet in lemon juice for about 10 minutes. Follow this therapy on a weekly basis until one finds a change. Lemon juice is a very mild natural acid and helps to dissolve dead and dry skin so that it can be easily removed. It is best to soak your feet in a lemon juice solution and then lightly scrub it with soft foot brush to gently exfoliate the top layers of dead skin that cause dry cracked heels.

Method 2:

Combine one teaspoon of Vaseline and juice from one whole lemon. Wash your feet and pat them dry before applying. Apply to the dry areas and heels of your feet until you’ve used the entire batch. You should do this just before bed and wear wool socks to lock in the moisture.

Pic from (http://www.botoxhyperhidrosis.co.uk/)

Botox can be injected into the skin areas of the body which affected by hyperhidrosis. It helps to reduce sweating in these areas by blocking the signals from the brain to the sweat glands. The effect normally lasts for few months; the treatment can be repeated if necessary. Botox injection to treat hyperhidrosis takes around 30 to 45 minutes. The treatment can be done in just a lunch break.

This treatment is not painful. Patient will only feel slight discomfort or skin irritation as the mild electric current pass through the palms or feet. The treatment duration is around 20 to 30 minutes. To get ideal result, 2 to 4 session of treatments are needed in a week. The symptoms will improve after a week or two.

Treatment 3

A dermatologist may use one or more of the following surgical techniques to remove sweat glands from the underarms:
  • Excision (cut out sweat glands)
  • Liposuction (remove with suction)
  • Curettage (scrape out)
  • Laser surgery (vaporize)
